TEHRAN (IQNA) – People face many hardships and adversities in life, some of which are not created by their own conduct but are the outcome different situations or plots of others.

Surah al-Falaq

In Surah Al-Falaq of the Holy Quran, we are advised to take refuge in God from these situations.

Al-Falaq is the 113th chapter of the Quran that has 5 verses and is in the 30th Juz. It is Makki and the 20th Surah revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

The world Falaq (the dawn, daybreak) comes in the first verse, giving the Surah its name.

In the first verse, God orders the Prophet (PBUH) to take refuge in God: “(Muhammad) Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn.”

Falaq means splitting something and separating something from another thing. It refers to the dawn because that is the moment the darkness of the night is broken.

God then tells the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in the second verse: “(Take refuge in God) from the evil of what He has created.”

This verse does not mean God’s creation includes evil but evil comes when the created ones go astray from the laws of creation and the defined path.

The next verse completes the command: “…seek His protection against the evil of the invading darkness.”

The word "Ghasigh" in this verse means the beginning of the night’s darkness and some interpreters believe it refers to any evil that comes our way.

The next verse point to another threat: “…from the evil of Naffasat (the blowers on knots).”

Many interpreters say Naffasat are those who practice witchcraft while other say these are women who whisper in men’s ears to make them change their mind.

The last danger that threatens humans and is mentioned in this Surah is envy.

Envy is one of the worst and ugliest characteristics that one may have and the fact that this Surah mentions it along with other evils shows how dangerous it can be.
