Feat of Turning Tribalism into Unity
The Holy Prophet (PBUH), who was the leader of Muslims, played the role of a unifier as the messenger of God.
The pivot in every religion is the prophet of that religion who achieves victory and demonstrates its firmness and might.
One of the roles the Holy Prophet (PBUH) played in creating unity was through delivering speeches and offering recommendations and also through his teachings.
One cannot find even one word or phrase from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that called for disunity and discord. Nor can one find such a word or phrase in the Holy Quran that was revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
Quite the opposite, both the Quran and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) have the most emphasis on boosting unity.
From the beginning, the Prophet’s (PBUH) objective in the sphere of society was to create and boost unity. He sometimes would even turn to pacts with non-Muslims to unite the society.
This shows that the Prophet (PBUH) viewed a society in which non-Muslims also lived as a unified society and that he thought about unity between Muslims and non-Muslims as well.
Of course, the Prophet (PBUH) confronted those non-Muslims who sought to undermine the Islamic society and destroy Islam itself.
One of the methods used by the Prophet (PBUH) for promoting unity in society was to encourage Islamic brotherhood bonds, which is unique in history.
Another move was standing up against any measure that caused discord and disunity, which means unity was more important than anything to the Prophet (PBUH).
He opened a path that led to rejection of tribalism. The Prophet (PBUH), with a precise sociological view and by creating bonds and treaties among tribes, turned the challenge of tribalism in Arabia into the opportunity of unity and accord. It was an art to form elements and components of unity from the areas of challenge to unity in society.
