The attack took place in Scarborough on May 10.

Police said the attack, which was caught on video, happened at around 7:45 p.m. in the area of Danforth and Victoria Park Avenues at the parking lot of the Baitul Aman Masjid.

Police said a man was walking to his vehicle from a nearby grocery store in a mosque parking lot when two people approached him from the rear of the vehicle. One, who appears to be holding a bat in the video, struck the man while the other kicked him, which caused the victim to fall to the ground. In the video, the attack continued with stomping and hitting as another car driven by a third suspect slowly pulled up a short distance from the assault. The suspects then walked toward the vehicle, entered it and drove away.

The victim has been identified in media reports as 67-year-old Mahbubul Alam Chowdhury, who was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the hate crimes unit had been notified. After investigating and speaking with Chowdhury, the assault was deemed not to be hate-motivated.

Police described the first suspect as a man with a thin build wearing a black hat, dark clothing, a black mask and red gloves.

The second suspect is described as a man with a medium build and dark clothing.

Police have yet to release a description of the third suspect.

Investigators are asking anyone with information, or who can identify the suspects, to contact police. The public can provide information by contacting police at 416-808-4100, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), or at www.222tips.com.
