Shahmoradi won the top prize in the 2nd edition of Otr Elkalam international Quran contest in Saudi Arabia in April.

He received a cash prize of three million Saudi riyals for coming first in the Quran recitation category of the contest.

In an interview with IQNA, he said he now seeks to learn the entire Quran by heart and also enhance his Arabic language skills.

He also said he has time to practice various styles of recitation.

Asked about his Quranic journey, Shahmoradi said it started in reciting eulogies, as his father was a eulogist.

Later, he joined a number of his friends in a Quran choral recitation group named Sabil al-Rashad.

“At first, I thought recitation of the Quran is difficult and I could not do it but gradually (that idea) faded away.”

In his first attendance in a Quran teaching session, instructed by Master Kazemi, he recited Surah Ad-Duha imitating the style of Egyptian qari Master al-Laythi, he said.

Master Kazemi pointed out his mistakes and asked him to practice imitating the style of another Egyptian legendary qari Master Minshawi.

When he recited the verses in the next session, the instructor applauded him al lot.

Even today, when he reads these verses, tears roll down his cheeks, Shahmoradi stated.
