Millions of Muslims Commemorate Ashura

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranians across the country along with Shia Muslims and others in different parts of the world hold mourning processions o Thursday to mark the day of Ashura, which is the climax of mourning rituals during the lunar month of Muharram.

 

Ashura commemorates the 7th century martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

With heavy hearts, the faithful come out in their millions across Iran as well as elsewhere in the world on Ashura to commemorate the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).

Muslims worldwide hold mourning rituals during the month of Muharram on the lunar calendar in remembrance of the suffering imposed on the religious icon, his family and his companions, by the tyrant of the time Yazid I, an Umayyad caliph, back in the seventh century.
