Teenage Canadian Qari Draws Applause in Malaysia Int’l Quran Contest
Muhammad Marouf Hussein, 13, recited verse 51 of Surah Muminun of the Quran and received a big round of applause for his beautiful recitation.
After his recitation, Marouf Hussein told IQNA that he has previously participated in international Quran competitions in Iran and Qatar.
He said he won the top title in Qatar’s Quranic event and came second in the international Quran competition for school students in Iran.
Marouf Hussein, who started recitation of the Quran seriously five years ago, described the level of Malaysia’s contest as high.
He went on to say that given the presence of qualified reciters like the representatives of Iran and Malaysia, coming first in the competition is difficult.
Malaysia’s 59th international Quran competition kicked off in the capital Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
The competition is being held in the two categories of recitation and memorization.
The panel of judges comprises 15 Quran experts from different countries, including Malaysia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Indonesia.
There are 38 Qaris and 30 memorizers of the Quran from different Muslim and non-Muslim countries competing in the Quranic event.
Winners of the top three ranks in the two categories, both in the men’s and women’s sections, will receive cash prizes of 10000 to 70,000 ringgits.
The motto of this year’s competition is "Islamic Brotherhood Based on Unity of Islamic Ummah”.
The international Quran contest is annually organized by the Malaysia government with the aim of promoting the culture of Quran recitation and fostering the teachings of the Holy Book.
