Al Khalifa Regime Tries to Depict Bahrain’s Crisis as Sectarian Issue
Nabeel Rajab said the regime’s attempt is to falsely present the crisis as a Shia-Sunni problem, Manama Post reported.
“The problem, however, is one between the people and the regime,” he underlined, adding that people demand their legitimate rights and seek freedom, justice and democracy.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Rajab criticized western countries, especially Britain, for their double-standard policy regarding the situation in Bahrain.
He condemned London’s policy of supporting the repressive Al Khalifa regime.
The ruling Al Khalifa regime has launched a heavy-handed crackdown on the peaceful anti-government movement in Bahrain, which started in 2011.
Since mid-February 2011, pro-democracy protesters have held demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain on almost daily basis, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.
On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to assist the Bahraini government in its crackdown on peaceful protesters.
Despite the brutal crackdown against the opposition, anti-regime demonstrations have continued unabated.
