Some 600,000 individuals have registered for performing I'tikaf (religious retreat) in mosques across the country, an Awqaf Organization official said.

Speaking in a press conference on Saturday, May 10, Hojat-ol-Islam Hossein Rouhaninejad added that the number of those willing to perform I'tikaf is predicted to rise to 700,000.
He noted that the number shows a 28-percent rise compared to the I'tikaf performers last year.
I'tikaf, a period of retreat in a mosque for a certain number of days, is a Mustahab (recommended) deed and the minimum period for performing it is three days, he stated.
Hojat-ol-Islam Rouhaninejad added that I'tikaf can only be performed in mosques and not in religious centers or elsewhere.
According to the official, more than 200 mosques in the country's universities will be among the mosques hosting the religious retreat ritual.
He went onto say that 33 percent of those registering for I'tikaf will be performing the religious ritual for the first time.
